A Unique Playstyle
When it comes to his playing style, Martinkus describes himself as a versatile guard who can “drive, shoot, and play in the post” while dribbling with control up the court. He doesn’t model his game after any particular player but instead focuses on utilizing his game knowledge and incorporating elements he picks up from watching others.
“I don't really model my game after any player. I just use my game knowledge, and when I watch people play, I see things I can take and use in-game.”
Finding Fuel and Motivation
Every athlete has a pre-game ritual, and for Domas, music plays a key role. “I usually listen to Drake to get my mind clear before my games so that when I'm on the court, I don't have to worry about anything and can concentrate only on the game,” he says.
Nutrition is equally important, and Martinkus finds solace in traditional Lithuanian dishes like Cepelinai (potato dumplings stuffed with meat). “I don't have a specific meal before a game; I usually just eat something small and then eat something bigger after the game.”
His love for basketball extends to his favorite motivational movie, Coach Carter. “It has humor, especially when he names every play after a sister, and it shows how hard players work to win.”
A Taste of International Competition
Playing for the London Stars has allowed Domas to travel and compete in various cities and countries. One trip stands out in particular. “I mostly enjoyed my time in Sopron, Hungary, because of the good competition we had there, unlike in England.”
Despite the excitement of international travel, Domas dreams of heading to the United States one day. “If I could go anywhere in the world, I would probably go to the States because it's got its own unique environment, which I would love to see, along with all its views and monuments.”
Beyond Basketball
Off the court, Domas finds joy in outdoor activities. “Other hobbies I have apart from basketball are bike riding and doing any outdoor activities such as skiing or camping, which allow me to have fun and be with my friends.”
But his focus remains firmly on his basketball journey. For the upcoming season, he aims to “develop mentally and physically,” knowing that he will be an U15 player competing at the U16 level. “My goals for next season are to develop mentally and physically, as my team will be young, and I will be U15 playing in U16, so I want to be ready.”
In the next five years, he hopes to earn scholarships to play basketball in the States, where he can elevate his game to new heights.
Words of Wisdom
As he reflects on his own journey, Domas offers advice to aspiring young players. “Always try to get better no matter what and never give up. If something's not going your way, just keep trying and keep your head up.”
With his resilience and determination, Domas Martinkus embodies the qualities of a rising star destined for greatness. His story is only just beginning, and as he continues to grow on and off the court, his future promises to be bright.
