1. To kick things off, could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started with basketball? My name is David Okaeben. I was born in Germany and moved to England at the age of 7. I started playing basketball at 12, quickly falling in love with the game.
2. What position do you play, and what do you believe are the key qualities that make you stand out in that position? I play as a forward/power forward. My standout quality is my elite rebounding ability. I consistently grab rebounds regardless of how I'm playing because I believe that's crucial to winning games.
3. Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model in basketball, and what lessons have you learned from them? Kobe Bryant has been my biggest inspiration due to his incredible work ethic. He taught me the importance of focusing on continuous improvement, aiming to get 1% better every day.
4. How would you describe the dynamics of your team, and what role do you play in fostering a positive environment both on and off the court? My team is very close, as we spend a lot of time together both in school and on the court. I contribute to a positive environment by bringing enjoyment to practice while still ensuring we give our 100%.
5. Looking at the current season, what are your personal goals and the team’s goals, and how do you plan to achieve them? This season, my goal was to give my all in every game and be a significant defensive presence. I believe in making up for off scoring nights by excelling on defense.
6. Basketball can present various challenges. Can you share a significant challenge you’ve faced as a player and how you overcame it? A recent challenge I faced was realizing my limitations when training with men, as I couldn't rely solely on my strength. This led me to focus on improving my skills and physical conditioning.
7. Can you recount a particularly memorable game or moment from your basketball career thus far and why it stands out to you? A memorable moment was a game where I underperformed against a team I had previously scored 33 points against. Their crowd's reaction reminded me of the importance of humility and respect for opponents.
8. Being a student-athlete can be demanding. How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your commitments to basketball? Balancing academics and basketball involves staying after school to complete coursework and maintaining focus on what's at stake to manage my responsibilities effectively.
9. What are your aspirations for your basketball career and your life after high school? Do you plan to pursue basketball at the collegiate level? My aspiration is to become a professional basketball player, aiming to play at the collegiate level for a team that values me.
10. Finally, what advice would you give to younger athletes who aspire to play high school basketball, and what message would you like to leave with your fans and supporters? To younger athletes, remember there's always someone better. Always be open to learning, especially from those who've experienced what you're going through.
